The South African Association for Energy Economics (SAAEE) in partnership with the International Association for Energy Economics would like to invite you to join us for a breakfast event which will be, hosted at the Fire and Ice Hotel in Pretoria on the 21st of August 2023.

We have invited speakers from five countries across three continents – Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, Norway and Pakistan to give insight into the energy landscape in each of these countries and the key policy and regulatory issues they are facing.

This will be followed by a panel discussion to explore what the transition to a more sustainable energy future means in these very different socio-economic contexts, the types of challenges that have arisen and what progress is being made. This discussion will be  facilitated by Muhammed Patel, Senior Economist at Trade and Industrial Policy Strategies (TIPS)

Introduction  to the Speakers:


Prof. Joseph M. Ntayi (PhD)

Prof. Joseph M. Ntayi (PhD) is the Dean, Faculty of Economics, Energy and Management Science, Makerere University Business School. His current research interests are in Positive Psychology, Local Economic Development and Fossil Fuels, HRM, Public Health, Financial Inclusion, Supply Chain Management, Energy Poverty, Energy Justice, Energy Security, Energy Policy and Regulation, Risk Management, Project Management, and Procurement.

Dr Stephen Kirama (PhD)

Dr Stephen Kiriama (PhD)  is a lecturer and Senior Consultant at the Department of Economics University of Dar es Salaam and a Research Fellow at the Environmental for Development Tanzania (EfDT) Centre with over 12 (12) years’ experience in the Public Sector Economics, Transport Economics (Roadway Pricing, Value for Money for Transport); Health Economics (health financing), Infrastructure (Energy (Natural Gas, Oil and Electricity), Social Infrastructure (Education and Health); Poverty Analysis; Monitoring Evaluation (M&E) and Impact Evaluation.

Ms Kay Walsh

Kay Walsh is the managing director and founder of Nova Economics, a specialist economic and strategy consultancy based in South Africa. She has over fifteen years of experience assisting a range of clients on corporate strategy, economic modelling and forecasting, economic regulation and project evaluation.

She has advised the national utility Eskom on regulatory and policy issues since 2009 and has authored several reports on the structure of the electricity market in South Africa, the impact of electricity tariff increases approaches to regulation and the economic costs of load shedding. She has provided advice on energy-related matters to clients including the EIUG, Exxaro, Vtti B.V, Transnet, TNB Malaysia, UNDP, UNDCF, GreenCape, and Tullow Oil. Kay holds a BSc in economics and Environmental Sciences from the University of Capetown and a Master of Commerce Economics (cum laude) from the University of KwaZulu Natal.

Prof. Olvar Bergland

Prof. Olvar Bergland is an associate Professor of Resource Economics at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences12. He is also a former president of the Norwegian Association of Economists (NAEE)3. His research interests include electricity economics, industrial organization, Bayesian econometrics, and non-market valuation13. He has published several articles on these topics.

Prof. Faisal Mirza

Faisal Mirza has been working as an Associate Professor at University of Gujrat for 12 years. University of Gujrat is part of the Colleges & Universities industry and located in Pakistan. His research interests include Energy Economics, Micro Economics, Efficiency and Productivity and Industrial organization
